What Should a Monthly SEO Report Include?

· Future Proofed

A useful SEO report connects the work completed to what changed in search and what that means for the business. A screenshot of rankings alone leaves too many questions unanswered.

Show the work and the verification

List the changes completed, the affected pages and how they were checked. Distinguish recommendations from fixes that are actually live. If a development task or an approval is blocked, name the dependency.

Content updates should have a clear purpose: a missing buyer question, an improved service explanation or a page that competed with another page for the same intent. Page count alone is not evidence of progress.

Read search metrics in context

Search Console impressions, clicks and query data help explain visibility. Analytics can add information about sessions and actions, but the systems do not measure exactly the same thing. Keep definitions and comparison periods clear.

Separate branded searches from service discovery where useful. Review location and intent so a gain in unrelated traffic does not hide weak performance for the services the business wants to sell.

  • Important page indexing and crawl issues
  • Relevant query and landing-page changes
  • Organic visits and measured enquiry actions
  • Qualified-lead feedback from the sales team
  • Seasonality, tracking changes and known data limits

Finish with decisions for the next period

The report should explain what will be done next and why. An indexing issue, a weak landing page and a lack of demand need different responses. Prioritise the work most likely to improve the customer journey and relevant visibility.

Avoid treating a movement in average position as the whole result. The mix of queries can change, and a page may appear for many more searches. Read the underlying pages and queries before drawing conclusions.

Common questions

Should reports include revenue?

Include it where the tracking and sales process support a reliable interpretation. Explain attribution limits and avoid presenting estimated revenue as confirmed sales.

What matters more: rankings or leads?

Rankings help diagnose visibility. Qualified enquiries and sales help judge business value. A useful report connects both.
